ICQ used to be the most popular IM application... until Microsoft launched MSN Messenger and thousands of ICQ users switched to it. In the meantime ICQ continued to be upgraded until finally reaching version 7.

ICQ 7 has a quick, painless installation process that hardly takes a couple of minutes and enables you to import contacts from other online services such as Facebook, Gmail and Windows Live, among others. Once installed on your system, the program plays its characteristic siren and launches, displaying a colorful, customizable interface ? with the omnipresent banner at the bottom, of course.

Text chats are still the main function in ICQ. You can spice them up with smileys and tzers (the equivalent to Live Messenger's winks), customize the text font and color, save the conversation to message history and play games with your friends. ICQ 7 also enables you to transfer files and send short text messages via phone.

Video chats have also been integrated in the latest version of ICQ. The program features an excellent video image quality, but the video chat is displayed on a separate window from the text chat and makes it a bit uncomfortable to use.

The most outstanding characteristic in this new ICQ is undoubtedly its integration with social networks. You'll find a tab devoted to notifications from Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Flickr, which enable you to track your friend's activities at all times. Oddly enough, you'll have to set these services up from the ICQ website.

ICQ keeps working on new versions to measure up to its main competitors but fails to really offer any new functions.

Photos too are hidden in such a way that you can't use iPhone Explorer to access them. The application is also unstable, and has a tendency to crash if you attempt to move files. Lastly, of course, changing the file tree could damage the functionality of you device.

If you want to use your iOS device as storage, something like USB Disk is perfectly functional, and much more stable. iPhone Explorer is a good example of a nice idea that doesn't work well in practice.

AnyDVD HD also moves beyond decryption and allows you to control the speed of your DVD drive. This is useful if you?re having trouble playing a DVD properly or if the noise of your drive is causing annoyance. Finally, there?s also an option in AnyDVD HD to display the frequency of your monitor for both NTSC and PAL displays although you probably won?t use this unless you?re having serious display issues.

The only drawback of AnyDVD HD is the number of daily updates that are released. Whilst this is obviously a good thing in terms of keeping it up-to-date with the latest encryption methods, the update alerts can be rather annoying and are prone to slowing your computer down.

However, this is a small price to pay for a program that seems able to crack all but the toughest disks and for anyone who likes to create backups of their favorite DVDs, AnyDVD HD is an essential addition to your software collection.

Picasa may be the leading photo management app on PC but JetPhoto Studio is a nice alternative if you're looking for something different.

JetPhoto Studio doesn't really compare with the big boys but it does offer a greater degree of control and processing power over your images in certain areas. JetPhoto Studio will import pictures from your camera as soon as you connect it. Alternatively, you can browse to albums on your PC or allow JetPhotoStudio to perform a full scan of your system.

The main interface is well presented and allows you to browse photos by date. There is a set of basic editing tools which allows you to crop images and add a few effects such as sepia, black and white, image contrast, and auto enhancing. You can also batch resize your photos and protect them with a watermark. JetPhoto Studio also enables you to rate your own photos via a star system, as well as tag them. However, tags are not transferable from one album to another and you have to create a new one every new album you create.

One of the better aspects of JetPhoto Studio is the ability to create screensavers, wallpapers, slide-shows and Flash movies from your collections. Unfortunately, however, there ¡s very little control over the types of animations and speed of the transitions. Finally, it's worth adding that you send JetPhoto Studio images via SMS or infrared, to your friends? mobiles, although this only works within the US. The developer has also recently added geo-tagging for GPS recognition in Google Earth. The best way to share your photos in online though and JetPhoto Studio makes this relatively easy via Flickr or the JetPhoto server.

Wavepad is a feature-rich free sound editor for Windows. You can record from audio inputs, like a microphone or a record player, import and edit sound files. It's good for making mixes or digitizing vinyl.

The range of options in WavePad basic - there is also a commercial "Masters" version - is impressive. You can add effects, fades, split tracks, merge tracks, and much more. Performing all of these tasks is easy, and easy to undo if you make a mistake. It's certainly user-friendly, and the fact you can import more or less any sound file format makes it incredibly accessible for anyone (there's no need to mess around with file conversion).

As well as importing from your hard drive, you can also import directly from CD, and there's a tool to burn whatever you want. There is a tone generator, and even a text to speech generator, so you can express yourself with a robotic voice. There are tabs at the bottom of the edit window for you to move easily between open files, a zoom tool so it's easy to highlight exactly the part you want when editing, and the highlighting itself is really intuitive, allowing you to apply effects with precision.

The one function I think WavePad is missing is a BPM analyzer - although this is sometimes unreliable in other programs, it's a nice feature to have.

For anyone that wants to mess around with their sound files - WavePad is a great and lightweight program to use.

I also missed having some sort of preferences menu to tweak Rising PC Doctor's functionality.

Rising PC Doctor includes an interesting bunch of analysis and optimization tools, but the program is not easy to manage and lacks configuration settings.

The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn isn't very challenging, but is fun none the less. Controls are simple, meaning anyone can get to grips with it. You'll play as Tintin, his dog Snowy as well as Captain Haddock. Even better, there's a two player coop mode, set in Captain Haddock's dreams, which are amusingly imaginative and lengthen what would otherwise be too short a game.

Tools are conveniently categorized so that you can quickly find what you're looking for: disk cleaner, uninstall manager, memory optimizer, file shredder, duplicates finder, tracks eraser... just about any tool you need.

All the tools included in Glary Utilities are generally very intuitive and in case they make important changes to the system (like the Registry repairing tool) Glary Utilities creates a backup copy first.

Not all the tools included in Glary Utilities include configuration settings, something we missed in some of them such as the Disk cleaner. Also, we would like to have a Firefox Assistant, the same way the program includes an Internet Explorer Assistant.

There are multiple ways to use Twitter, and if you usually use the Firefox browser, Power Twitter is an add-on that adds some interesting features.

Once installed, the Twitter home page will essentially load twice. This adds a fraction of time, but it's not prohibitive. Immediately, there are three buttons above the "what are you doing?" box - post photo, shorten link and today's question. The first two are really useful, and you can choose which photo site to utilize. The shorten link gives you a few extra characters to tweet with.

Today's Question is a silly option, but if you're really desperate for something to tweet, you can always use that to answer. Much better is that all the shortened links in your Twitter feed are expanded so you can see exactly what they contain. It also adds a re-tweet RT tab to each tweet, which is currently missing from the normal Twitter page.

While all this is useful, it comes at a price, which is an advert added to the sidebar. It's not too intrusive, but noticeable. Over all, while the functions are useful they do make the minimal Twitter design a bit more cluttered. If you're not too bothered about that, you may find it a really useful tool.

Radial Plus is an atmospheric retro space shoot 'em up, with the unusual feature that your weapons only harm enemies when they are deflected off surfaces. Imagine a shooter mixed with billiards, and you won't be far off.

The game may not look like much, and indeed it is pretty short, but Radial Plus is really cool. The minimal graphics are excellent, and explosions are really pretty. Sound effects are excellently handled too. In closed areas, explosions and gunfire are loud and sharp, while out in space they are muffled and distant. It's very effective, and accompanied by a moody electronic soundtrack that makes the Radial Plus excellently tense.

Default controls are via mouse and keyboard, and work well, which is good, as enemies are much more powerful than you, and you'll need excellent and quick aim to take out the tougher ones. Despite the short length of Radial Plus, it's challenging, and really satisfying.

With its retro-futurist styling, Radial Plus will please anyone who loves shoot 'em ups and big explosions in space!

CintaNotes' interface is very clean and modern, and while it's not skinnable, you can choose the color scheme. You can to minimize the app to the system tray, saving more space. If you use it a lot you can close it to the system tray too, so it's always to hand. CintaNotes will order your notes by date and time, title link or size, as well as add tags to notes and order them that way. There is no image support - it currently only keeps text based notes - though obviously you can keep a note of links to images.

This portable version of CintaNotes can be installed and ran on a USB drive, so you can take your notes with you.

CintaNotes is a really well realized note manager, and is a fantastic way to quickly store and retrieve ideas and information.

You could pretty much consider FileZilla an open source success story. It's popular, works well and fast, and regularly updated. If you're looking for a solid FTP client what more could you ask more?

In fact, FileZilla is not just limited to FTP, but also handles FTPS and SFTP for secure transfers of multiple files on multiple servers. The interface gives you a quick outlook of all your transfers, sites and disks and makes it easy to drag and transfer. I also quite like the QuickConnect feature to access your favorite server in seconds.

FileZilla is known to be fairly fast, and can also resume downloads and handle very big transfers, I'm talking here higher than 4 GB. You can set both local and remote filters for things like images, explorer files or CVS and SVN directories or even create your own. FileZilla also includes a tool to compare directories in terms of file size or modification time.

The application can guide you when setting up your network and lets you set speed limits in case you don't want to overload your bandwidth. One thing really missing from FileZilla though is a scheduler to automatically set transfer times.

Despite lacking a scheduler, FileZilla is an excellent open source FTP client.

Firefox is of course Mozilla's big success story but the Mozilla Foundation do a lot more than web browsers. The unusually named SeaMonkey is a Mozilla product which has lofty ambitions - to be a web browser, advanced email, newsgroup and feed client, IRC chat, and HTML editor in one.

If this sounds a bit much to pull of well you'd be right. SeaMonkey is a bit of an outdated concept nowadays and it's no surprise that it carried on the work that Netscape started many years ago. It's a lot to get right in one go but this latest release sees SeaMonkey finally brought up to date for the demands of internet users today. And you know from the start it can't be that bad - under the hood, SeaMonkey is based on the same Mozilla source code which powers such things as Firefox, Thunderbird, Camino, Sunbird and Miro.

The similarities of SeaMonkey with Firefox are obvious from the start and with good reason. SeaMonkey 2.0 has been refurbished with a modern version of Firefox based on Firefox 3.5.4 and is now much closer to Firefox as far as user profiles, add-ons, and functionality of user interface elements are concerned. Tabs in SeaMonkey can now be reopened after they have been closed and the way passwords and usernames are handled has been overhauled. To select another part of the suite you want to use, just go to the 'Window' option in the Menu Bar and select either Browser, Mail and Newsgroups, Address Book, IRC Chat and Composer.

There are several other major improvements in SeaMonkey related to the mail client. Setting up an account is easy and retrieving e-mail using the IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) protocol is now faster and mail is synchronized by default by your computer. And at long last, email accounts, folders, and messages can be viewed in tabs.

On the downside, in terms of looks, SeaMonkey hasn't changed an awful lot despite the release of Windows 7. The IRC chat client still looks very basic, techy and intimidating too. Also, some people feel that the new SeaMonkey has moved too far away from it's original Netscape origins in look, functionality and feel. Finally, there seems there is no basic import function to import passwords from earlier versions of Seamonkey or even Firefox, which is a bit annoying.

SeaMonkey will still probably still only appeal to those that have used it from version 1.0 but there's no doubt that this latest release makes it a much more competitive web suite.

Video and audio can be tested using Frostwire?s media player which gives you an immediate preview of your file.

It should be noted that FrostWire is basically a stripped-down version of Limewire, but is a not-for-profit project. The developer claims it will never support Digital Rights Management (DRM) or any type of advertising. However, the demise of Limewire due to legal issues mean that FrostWire may well be targeted in the future for closure.

FrostWire for Mac is a hugely popular alternative for anyone who misses Limewire.

As media converters go, Media Buddy wins on conversion ease and formats, but doesn't have the extra features that might make it worth paying for. Media Buddy deals easily with batch conversions, which is great, but a batch conversion feature without an auto-shutdown option is missing some of the point. Add that to the fact that the only thing you can tweak in Media Buddy is the individual conversion profiles, and it feels a little inflexible, from a non-conversion point of view.

Despite these problems, Media Buddy's a nice program to use and will ensure that you get the most out of your media files. It's not sensational but at the same time is a much better bet than the very many very mediocre converters out there.
