Based on IE
Although Avant Browser is based on the Internet Explorer engine, it doesn?t fall victim to the same security vulnerabilities (although no-one is claiming that it?s invulnerable), and while it?s at it, adds some great tools designed to enhance your browsing experience. That said, it lacks the smooth, modern looks of browsers like Chrome, and looks suspiciously like IE did a few years back.
Full of features
To appeal to a wider audience, Avant Browser has quick links that let you quickly translate pages to a wide selection of languages, or you can customize the look of the browser using the skins that are included. Of course, no modern browser could claim to be complete without tabbed browsing and Avant Browser really delivers the goods with a system that allows you to quickly reload tabs after you?ve closed them.
And extras...
In fact, Avant Browser has some of the best extras that we?ve seen to date, in particular the system whereby you can view windows side-by-side. There?s also a useful feature that allows you to log in to a special Avant Browser profile, which means that all your user preference settings, bookmarks, etc, will be available wherever you use Avant. This synced profile feature is no longer hot news, but it's still a nice feature that brings Avant Browser more in line with its contemporaries.
The bottom line
Avant Browser was relatively unknown as a mainstream browser and as such was never restricted from experimenting and taking the best ideas from the big hitters, as well as adding its own nuggets to the mix. A few years ago this was impressive, and Avant Browser was a genuine alternative to browsers like IE and Firefox. Unfortunately, it hasn't moved with the times, and although still functions perfectly well, it looks and feels outdated. If you're happy with your Internet Explorer experience but are craving more options, it may well suit your needs, but most users would be better off looking elsewhere.
Avant Browser used to be a good browser, but these days, there are much better options out there.
